Boschendal Chenin Blanc 2010 at £5-99

From one of South Africa’s original wine farms comes this fruity, well-balanced and full bodied wine, distinguishable by its exotic mango and honey aromas. The palate has a core of tropical fruit flavours with hints of nuts and honey, the result of weekly lees stirring in a process called ‘battonage’, which allows for greater richness in the wine.

Barista Pinotage 2009 at £5-99

From the Val de Vie wine estate in the heart of the cape winelands, where wine production dates back to 1825. This is a deliberately modern offering by winemaker Bertus Fourie, who has concentrated on drawing out the coffee-like aromas of South Africa’s signature grape. Intense on the nose, with a bouquet of coffee, chocolate and cherry, with meaty, savoury hints. The tannins are ripe, perfectly suiting the round and mouth-filling plum and mulberry fruit. Drink on its own or with red meat dishes. Bertus’ recommends a blue-cheese-filled brandy snap with chocolate and roasted coffee beans!

La Motte Shiraz 2008 at £8-79

Working to stringent environmental, ethical and quality standards, La Motte wines enjoy success worldwide. Aged in French and American oak for 16 months, this Shiraz shows intense black cherry and blueberry fruit integrated with cigar box, coffee, clove and cinnamon spice. Bellingham ‘The Bernard Series’ Old Vine Chenin Blanc 2009/2010, Western Cape

Bellingham wine-maker Graham Weerts located an exceptional pocket of old, low-yielding Chenin Blanc bush vines. Excited by the intense, even-ripening and rich quality of the fruit, he vinified a limited volume of lightly-wooded, lavish and full-bodied wine with a well-rounded, seamless mouthfeel. The result was so good that Graham felt the wine deserved its own unique identity and created “The Bernard Series” concept.

KC Cabernet Merlot 2008, Klein Constantia, Coastal Region

Klein Constantia lies on the narrow Cape Peninsula, only 20km from the centre of Cape Town, where there is exposure on all sides to the maritime influences of the southern Atlantic and the False Bay area, which moderate the tempratures within the Constantia Valley. Typically South African in style, with a deep ruby core of ripe fruit and spicy aromas from 20 months’ barrel ageing. Weighty and richly textured, with plenty of fine tannins providing a lasting finish. Matches well with roast beef or any hearty red meat dishes.

Houghton Sauvignon Semillon 2007/2008, Western Australia

Limited parcel – availability will vary regionally so check with your local store to see what they have to offer: A classic Bordeaux blend, made in a more modern, up-front style. Vinified without oak, the wine is cold fermented and clarified, and is bottled immediately after fermentation is complete, without any ageing to dampen the zesty primary fruit character. The nose displays citrus and tropical characteristics with a delicate herbaceousness reminiscent of fresh hay. The palate is vibrant with citrus flavours accompanied by gooseberry and passion fruit.

2010 The Beach House White, Sauvignon/Semillon, Douglas Green, South Africa

Douglas Green began his business with the purchase of the Forrer brother’s Stukvat liquor business in Paarl’s main road in 1938. Recognised as South Africa’s first true negotiant wine producer, he bucked conventional wine trends and ignored regionalism in favour of quality and price. Traversing the Cape winelands seeking out first-rate vineyards and cellars, he sourced grapes and wine to blend in his top quality range of wines.
