This wine is made by Boekenhoutskloof, a modern winery in the Franschoek Valley, which planted its first vines in 1993. The area has a cool climate and an abundance of water, making it ideal for growing a wide range of grape varieties. Generous flavours of red berry fruit and ripe plums and a soft and supple texture on the palate. The tannins are smooth and complemented by touches of oak. A great wine to drink with simple red meat dishes such as homemade burgers, beef sausages or pork chops.
Ken Forrester Chenin Blanc Select 2009
This Chenin Blanc Select is made just for us with prime Stellenbosch grapes aged nine months in French oak for unsurpassed complexity. But that’s not all … “I will not see another vintage like this for the rest of my life,” said head winemaker Ken Forrester. Growers were nervously chewing their fingernails and expecting seasonal rainfall to ruin the 2009 harvest (vines suck up the water – grapes get bigger but flavours are diluted). But the rain never appeared, growers’ patience paid off and grapes enjoyed a lengthy ripening period and achieved incredible depths of flavour. “Ken Forrester knows his Chenin Blanc inside out” (Jonathan Ray, Telegraph) and his FMC (Forrester Meinert Chenin) was Wine Spectator’s highest scoring South African white. This offers the same complexity and freshness – and it’s tremendous value. Don’t miss out!
Danford’s Barrel Cabernet Merlot 2008
Klein Constantia is one of the Cape’s oldest and most prestigious estates. The owner, Duggie Danford Jooste also owns vineyards in Stellenbosch which is where this exclusive wine comes from. It is made by newly appointed Klein Constantia winemaker, Adam Mason, who brings an injection of youth and overseas experience – including several vintages in Bordeaux. All mouthwatering blackcurrant, sweet-cassis, spice and tobacco … a New World ‘Bordeaux’ for big red fans! Serve as you would fine young claret – with rare roasted red meats.
La Motte Sauvignon Blanc 2009, Western Cape
This is a lively, zesty Sauvignon Blanc bursting with apple characters which are quickly followed by gooseberry and green pepper. The palate is dry but full with racy acidity which makes this a good wine to drink with spicy foods.
Boschendal Sauvignon Blanc 2010/2011, Coastal Region
Nestled in one of the most picturesque valleys in the Cape winelands, Boschendal Wine Estate has a winemaking tradition of over 300 years. Cool fermented in stainless steel tanks to preserve the delicate fruit flavours, this Sauvignon shows tropical fruit, citrus and herbs on the nose, crisp acidity and a clean, lingering finish.
