Stellenrust is an exceptional South African estate in the premium region of coastal-cooled Stellenbosch. It’s won many top awards, including 2019 Winemaker of the Year and White Wine of the Year three times. That was for their remarkable Chenin Blanc and in 2021 their Pinotage was among the Top Ten in South Africa. The property was originally founded in the 1600s, but only turned its attention to growing vines a century back. More recently, in 1999, its fortunes rose dramatically when dentist-turned-winemaker Tertius Boshoff and accountant Kobie van der Westhuizen took over. As Wine magazine SA wrote, “The rise of the Stellenrust brand is frankly remarkable.” Their Heritage Collection is the flagship range, “where soil meets vine meets soul” and this is their stellar Pinotage. Matured a year in French oak, this rich, dark red is smooth, weighty and velvety – an ideal choice with roast meats or a hearty stew.
