2009 The Beach House White, Sauvignon/Semillon, Douglas Green, Western Cape

Douglas Green began his business with the purchase of the Forrer brother’s Stukvat liquor business in Paarl’s main road in 1938. Recognised as South Africa’s first true negotiant wine producer, he bucked conventional wine trends and ignored regionalism in favour of quality and price. Traversing the Cape winelands seeking out first-rate vineyards and cellars, he sourced grapes and wine to blend in his top quality range of wines. It was not long before this progressive approach established Douglas Green wines amongst the most reliable quality and affordable wines in South Africa.

Kanonkop is undoubtedly one of the top estates in South Africa and their highly sought after Pinotage shows this South African variety at its best. Full-bodied and concentrated, this powerful wine, showing lashings of spicy oak flavours integrated with ripe berry fruit, is best left alone for a couple of years before drinking.

Thelema Cabernet Sauvignon 2006, Stellenbosh

Gyles Webb, Thelema winemaker, was voted ‘Winemaker of the Year’ in 1995 by South Africa’s Wine Magazine for his determination to use good quality fruit which he believes to be the single most quality determinant in winemaking. Concentrated blackcurrant, blackberry and mocha flavours are in abundance with hints of mint and eucalyptus. A powerful wine with distinct South African character, drinking well now but will benefit from several years of ageing.
