Named after a track in the mountains above the small town of Wolsey, Robertson, leading to the beautiful Ceres Valley, this red leads the charge for South African Malbec. The great Bordeaux variety and Southern French stalwart has undergone a renaissance in recent years in Argentina; now wines showing what it can do in South Africa are beginning to reach us – and this is a stunning testament to its future in this country. A gutsy, full-bodied wine full of ripe red and black fruit, with toasty vanilla notes and amazing complexity for its price, this is a wine to really savour.
Bellingham Mocha Java Merlot 2010, Coastal Region
This wine owes its coffee-house name to the savoury coffee bean aromas that the winemakers have actively sought to bring out of the wine. The grapes are sourced from several parcels, many of which are of low-yielding bush vines, producing intensely flavoured fruit. Pronounced aromas of coffee, cocoa and black cherry characterise the intense nose. Smooth and full-textured on the palate, with harmonious oak, and a long finish. Will partner a range of barbecued meats, grilled lamb chops or meaty pasta sauces.
Skoonuitsig Chenin Blanc
A fantastic thirst-quenching drink to enjoy with friends. The wine is a great example of the Chenin Blanc grape, locally called Steen. It offers floral and vegetal notes on the nose and palate.
The Grinder Pinotage 2010
Just as Malbec has soared in Argentina and Shiraz triumphed Down Under, so Pinotage is South Africa’s trump card red – with a distinctive spicy, coffee nose and sumptuous, rich berry flavours. And The Grinder is a textbook example of the quality good Pinotage can achieve – with instant success at one of the world’s most important wine shows. The grapes were picked at the last possible minute for optimum ripeness (and that lovely velvety feel in your mouth) from three premium vineyard sites. But the first thing you’ll notice is the wonderful mocha roast coffee bean nose. Perfect with grilled spare ribs and savoury sauces.
Thelema Shiraz 2008, Stellenbosch
This is a rich, robust wine with plenty of ripe dark fruit and spice on the nose. Barrel ageing in 85% French and 15% American oak give the palate a lovely toasty finish and add structure and finesse. This is a full bodied wine which will be a great match for grilled meats.
