2009 Sauvignon Blanc, Seidelberg Estate

New winemaker Alicia Rechner took over the reins here, and this is her first vintage, having joined the Seidelberg outfit in December 2009. Having made wine internationally, she has come back to South Africa & this idyllic estate, founded in 1680 on the southern slopes of the Paarlberg, and now owned by German émigré Roland Seidel. There’s excellent weight and depth of crisp apple and lemon flavours in this minerally-fresh Sauvignon. Lovely with fresh crab.

Laibach Merlot Blend ‘The Ladybird’

Laibach were the first certified organic block in Stellenbosch and this wine has become a benchmark for organic wine production in South Africa. Named in tribute to the 3,000 Ladybirds that are released each January to combat the presence of the mealybug and protect the vines. These little creatures are a remarkable deterrent and avoid the need for the use of pesticides to eradicate pests. This wine is a Merlot dominated Bordeaux blend, and has a complex nose with hints of spice, chocolate and mocha. Good structure with plum and mineral complexity and a lingering finish. Showing graceful elegance, this wine over delivers on quality and showcases this estate as one of the leading lights in South Africa.

Backsberg Pumphouse Shiraz

Selected from mature vineyards that show intense varietal character including black cherry, pepper and spice. Whilst full bodied, the fruit is ripe and sweet and the tannins are soft. A subtle mint and vanilla complexity is derived from a period of maturation in barrel and enhances the long finish.

Drakenskloof Pinotage 2011

A cross between Pinot Noir and Cinsault, Pinotage is unique to South Africa, but was neglected in favour of international stars until recently. Today, however, it is “the talk of the party” (Tim Atkin MW). Drakenskloof was made by Paarl born Anton Swarts at one of South Africa’s top award winning wineries, Spier, founded in 1692 near Stellenbosch. The estate not only boasts a rich wine heritage, but within the domaine there is also a hotel, restaurant and cheetah reserve!Anton aged the wine in a combination of American and French oak, which has allowed gently smoky tannins to support the ripe berry flavours. Soft enough to be enjoyed on its own, this red is versatile with food, too – lamb or pork and chorizo casserole perhaps.

West Cape Howe Shiraz 2009

A paradise for surfers, Western Australia is home to some of the country’s finest wineries. An absence of extreme temperatures in Summer and Winter allows the grapes to linger on the vine and develop impressive flavour and depth. The upshot is some gorgeously complex and elegant wines. This fine red is from West Cape Howe Wines, which was run by Brendan and Kylie Smith for a “highly successful seven years” (Halliday). Gavin Berry, former winemaker to legendary Plantagenet Wines, bought the property in 2004 and has continued to build on its success.Gavin combined smoky blackberry Shiraz with cherry rich Tempranillo, maturing the wine in oak barrels for a year to add complexity. Enjoy with peppered steaks or roast lamb.
