Scarborough Reserve Cape Point Sauvignon Blanc 2012

Ocean fresh aromas of gooseberries, fresh shelled peas and asparagus mingle with intriguing notes of spice. This lovely aspect comes from the 30% of the wine that was fermented in French oak. The Reserve cuvée is the brainchild of Duncan Savage, one of South Africa’s leading Sauvignon producers. He hand selected parcels of Sauvignon from coastal vineyards, including those on the wind ravaged peninsula near the conservation village of Scarborough. This is a wine of impressive quality and finesse, drinking beautifully now in its first flush of youth. It will however continue to evolve over the next few years. Enjoy Scarborough Reserve Sauvignon with Thai coconut prawns, chicken and asparagus penne or simply by the bottle with good friends.

Detour Sauvignon Blanc 2012

Fine Cape Sauvignon Blanc can combine dazzling New World aromatic fruit with an elegance reminiscent of Loire classics. And the man behind Detour does it beautifully. Charles Back of Fairview Estate and our Six Hats range is also a keen mountain biker. One day, with co-winemakers Anthony de Jager and Charl du Plessis, he came across a special vineyard along one of the many ‘roads less travelled’ that crisscross the winelands of the Cape. He bought the grapes and made a brilliant Sauvignon that captures the extra ripeness and class of South Africa’s cracking 2012 vintage.Fresh, crisp, zesty, with lovely aromatic gooseberry fruit, Detour is tops with seafood, and well suited to salads and vegetarian dishes too. Or try with goat’s cheese.

Single Track to the Back Road White 2012

Fairview Estate is a family owned property situated on the southwest facing slopes of Paarl Mountain in South Africa’s Western Cape. The first wine was in fact produced here in 1699, but the estate really began to shine from around 1937 when Charles Back I took possession. The current owner, Charles Back II, was voted the second most influential person in the South African wine industry – after Nelson Mandela! This aromatic white was produced by the estate’s rising young star Anthony de Jager, a winemaker and viticulturalist. He is also a keen mountain biker, and knows the local vineyards well, as he spends much of his weekends cycling around the Cape winelands.A delicious apéritif, this white is tasty, too, with grilled salmon steaks.

Stumble Vineyards Pinotage Rose 2012

A talented winemaker with seemingly boundless energy, Bruce Jack was awarded South Africa’s ‘Winemaker of the Year’ in 2009. Perhaps his enthusiasm is due to him being struck by lightning while working a vintage in Bordeaux. And that was after studying a degree in English and Politics in the Cape, English literature at St Andrews, then oenology at Australia’s renowned Roseworthy. He certainly knows the technical side of wine inside out and used his skills to extract the ripe berry flavour of Pinotage in this wine – allowing just enough skin contact after delicate pressing to give a beautiful pink hue.The grapes come from coastal cooled vineyards that lend crisp elegant fruit. Tasty solo or with fish, spicy stir-fry or sauced white meats.
