“Hamilton Russell Pinot Noir is a silky, spicy red wine from one of South Africa’s top estates. Founded in 1975, this iconic estate is a renowned Pinot Noir and Chardonnay specialist. It took founder Tim Russell years of research to discover the best site to plant his first vines. He bought a 170-hectare plot next to Hermanus, by the sea, in the Hemel-en-Aarde (aptly meaning heaven on earth) subregion of Walker Bay. His son, Anthony, took over in 1991 and narrowed the estate plantings down to the two Burgundy grapes. As Master of Wine Anthony Howard writes in Decanter Magazine, “Hamilton Russell Estate wines are not attention seekers but they undoubtedly offer some of the finest, most individual, expressions of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay anywhere in the world”. Like Burgundy, the wines very much express their terroir. This Pinot Noir has delightful fresh red fruit with a hint of oak and spice.
